Data Analyst

The North West Company (NWC) is seeking a meticulous and analytical Data Analyst to join our Strategy, Planning, and Analytics department. This cross-functional role involves working closely with key stakeholders across NWC Business Units and departments to execute data analytics that facilitate customer-driven decisions, actions, and outcomes. The ideal candidate will analyze business data, trends, and transactional data to recommend strategies that enhance business performance and profitability.

Your Role:  
  1. Business Data Analysis :
  • Conduct business data analysis using appropriate methods of data collection, modeling, visualization, problem-solving, and analytical models.
  • Assist in the development and writing of business cases, project charters, and project schedules.
  • Run scheduled and ad-hoc reports to identify, analyze, and interpret trends in complex data sets.
  • Work with the team to operationalize, streamline, and refine processes and reporting.
  • Identify and analyze competition and market trends to recommend strategies.
  • Assist in refining the long-term strategic plan and work closely with management to prioritize business and information needs.
  • Recommend and document quality metrics, ensuring they are tracked and analyzed.
  • Provide support and analyses on ad hoc projects.
 
  1. Transactional Data Analysis :
  • Conduct deep dive analyses to study key area trends and opportunities to drive customer satisfaction and business improvements.
  • Run ad-hoc analyses to identify and recommend innovative strategies using data visualization, modeling tools, and programming languages such as Tableau, Power BI, Oracle Analytics, Python, Power Query, Alteryx, and Power Excel.
  • Research industry trends and best practices to recommend innovative programs and improvements.
  • Analyze performance against banner, group, and departmental objectives.
  • Monitor approved Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), identify trends, and suggest improvement steps.
  • Communicate KPI results regularly to various departments and provide other ad hoc analytics as requested.

Desired Skills & Experience:     
  • Undergraduate degree in business, data science, math, or a related field.
  • Previous analytics experience considered an asset.
  • Master’s Degree in Data Science is considered an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of Excel, including Power Query.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (SQL, R, C++, Python, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of visualization tools and modeling software (Power BI, Tableau, Oracle Analytics, Alteryx, etc.).
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, with advanced skills in Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Experience analyzing and reporting data to identify issues, trends, or exceptions.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize workload effectively.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work across organizational lines.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to handle confidential information professionally.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to recognize trends and provide solutions.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • Some travel required (approximately 7 days per year, domestic or international).
