Manager, Inventory Accounting

Are you a detail-oriented, forward-thinking, passionate professional accountant? The Manager, Inventory Accounting with the North West Company (NWC) is an opportunity to use your skills to oversee retail inventory management for an international retailer headquartered in Winnipeg.

As the Manager, Inventory Accounting, you manage a team which produces, analyzes and costs NWC’s retail inventories.  You develop and maintain effective delivery of inventory valuation, counts and review, inventory maintenance and inventory reporting. In this role, you are the main point of contact within the head-office finance team for inventory, for all business groups within our Canadian and International divisions. You will have the opportunity to work with various department leaders across the company on projects and process improvements.

Your Role:
  • Develop and maintain processes to manage Food and General Merchandise inventories.
  • Provide leadership, direction, and training to Inventory Control staff.
  • Review and analyze unusual inventory count results prepared by your team.
  • Monitor the function and financial integration of the company’s inventory management system (Retek) in both Canadian and International divisions.
  • Maintain regular contact with various departments such as procurement, logistics, stores and sales & operations to properly maintain and report on inventory levels, problems and results.
  • Maintain accurate reports on inventory results, detailed and summary.
  • Oversee the month-end process for inventory reporting, ensuring all deadlines are met;
  • Analyze, report and make decisions on margin booking and shrink rates.
  • Provide inventory related and margin insights to various divisions of the company including senior leaders throughout the organization.
  • Provide support during the annual audit process by working with the external auditors.
Desired Skills & Experience:
  • CPA or legacy accounting designation (or candidates enrolled in a professional accounting program) with more than 5 years of accounting experience.
  • An aptitude/interest in financial systems.
  • Intermediate Microsoft Excel abilities.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent organization skills, with attention to detail and ability to work in a deadline oriented environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing deadlines.
  • Policy oriented and ability to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Effectively able to support peers according to the vision set by your manager.
  • Strong communication skills, efficient and accountable.
  • Supervisory experience is an asset.
